What is Kenno?

KENNO is a tool that helps identify questions of responsibility in projects that make systematic use of data, digital technology, artificial intelligence or algorithms.

KENNO is based on themed modules and a handbook, which are used to run a workshop. The modules contain questions on different themes, answered together in small, multi-professional groups through discussion. The handbook helps document the discussion, create the necessary actions, and return to important questions at different stages of the project.

KENNO is not a tick-box exercise that gives a ready answer to whether a project is responsible or not. The idea of KENNO is to bring together people from different professional backgrounds to consider a project’s goals and impacts, and whether they are advanced in appropriate and responsible ways. The value of KENNO comes from shared discussion and shared observations.

What is KENNO based on?

KENNO is based on the Dutch Data Ethics Decision Aid (DEDA) tool, developed by the Data School at Utrecht University. KENNO is based on DEDA for Media version 0.5. Special thanks to Karin van Es and Mirko Tobias Schäfer for the collaboration and for permission to develop DEDA further! You can explore the Finnish version of DEDA at repair-research.fi/deda.

What does KENNO consist of?

1. Handbook

The handbook contains instructions for the workshop, information about the modules, the Project summary form that introduces the workshop, and the module documentation. Documentation made in the handbook clarifies questions of responsibility and makes it easier to return to difficult questions or points of friction.’

2. Modules

The workshop is based on hexagonal modules containing different themes and related questions. The observations, actions and points of friction from the discussion are documented in the handbook. In addition, there are two auxiliary modules: the Values module and the Workshop flow module.
